Blue Ridge Pkwy Drive to Bedford & D-Day Memorial Tour (SVBCC Event)

Nothing like a summer drive on the Blue-Ridge Parkway. On Saturday July 11, we’ll plan to meet on Afton Mountain in the old Howard Johnson’s parking lot for a 9:30 departure. We’ll take a leisurely, approximately 2 hour (85 mi.), drive down the beautiful Blue-Ridge Parkway, stopping at one or two overlooks on our way to the Peaks of Otter restaurant for lunch.

After lunch, there are three very interesting sites you can visit in or near the town of Bedford if you wish. We won’t do these as an organized group, but you can visit the one(s) that interest you. They are all worth seeing. Tickets should be purchased at the individual site(s).

• Bedford Boys Tribute Center
Museum dedicated to the story of the “Bedford Boys” who sacrificed so much for the country on D-Day, with artifacts. Featuring a virtual-reality film of the D-Day invasion.

• National D-Day Memorial
The National D-Day Memorial honors the bravery and sacrifice of Allied forces during the June 6, 1944, Normandy invasion. Bedford holds a unique place in history as the town that sustained the highest per capita D-Day losses in the United States, making it a fitting home for this solemn tribute.
