SUMMARY:Picnic + Motorcycle Museum + British Car Tech Session at Mike Mutter's
DESCRIPTION:Michael Mutter has invited us to his beautiful home and workshop/museum on the Rivanna River near Earlysville. He admits to being more into motorcycles than cars (although he has a beautiful XK150 Drophead). Expect to see Nortons\, Vincents and Velocettes among the British bikes in this private collection. \nHere’s updated information from Michael: \n“Please join us for a luncheon at my home at 600 Sweibyan Dr. Earlysville VA 22936 to view my collection and shop from Noon to 3:30 on Saturday May 10. I will supply pulled pork\, black beans and rice\, beer\, wine and some form of sparkling water. Please feel free to bring an appetizer or dessert or supply your special dietary needs. \nMy collection is primarily motorbikes (OK\, also a 1960 Jaguar XK150 DHC\, hence membership in this club) with nearly two dozen British bikes from 1931 to 1972 with makes including Vincent\, Velocette\, Norton\, Ariel and Matchless\, and a number (greater than 30)  of Japanese\, Italian and other European bikes\, as well\, mostly from the 50s to 70s. I do my own mechanical and cosmetic work and will give a tour of the shop as well. \nThere will also be several technical demonstrations more relevant to the four wheel inclined given by Mark Lee. \nI hope to see you all. \nBest\,\nMichael Mutter” \nMark Lee is planning a brief tech session in Michael’s workshop to cover these three topics: \n\nThe inner workings of a gearbox – Mark has a dissected MGB gearbox and laid it out so that you can see precisely how power flows through the input shaft and layshaft to the gears on the output shaft\, what happens when you change gears\, and how synchromesh actually works.\nRelays demystified – how common relays actually work (much simpler than many realize)\, how their wiring is virtually universal\, and how you can add one to a circuit. If you don’t have a relay in your headlamp circuit\, this will show you how you can add one for brighter light and reduced strain/wear on your headlight switch.\nThe basics of constant vacuum carburetors like SU and Zenith-Stromberg – how they actually work and how they differ from conventional venturi carbs. We’ll have an S.U. apart for reference.

SUMMARY:[MOVED TO SUNDAY!] Michael Brittingham Memorial Skyline Wildflower Tour
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: BECAUSE OF THE LIKELIHOOD OF RAIN ON SATURDAY\, WE ARE USING THE RAIN DATE (SUNDAY 4/27). Everything just moves by 24 hours. \nIn 2015\, club member Michael Brittingham suggested a Spring tour from the southern entrance of Skyline Drive at Rockfish Gap up to the Skyland Resort to take in the views and wildflowers. In tribute to Michael\, who recently departed\, this tour is a chance to escape to the mountain tops and soak up the beauty of it all. \nThe group will meet near the Rockfish Gap (South Entrance) East of Waynesboro\, VA off Highway 250 (see map). \nTimetable: \n\n8:30 AM – Gather at the old Howard Johnson’s parking lot off Howardsville Tpke. (Rockfish Gap/Afton). Close to where Route 250 and Howardsville Tpke meet.\n9 AM – Begin Tour – Enter Skyline Drive at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station. Proceed about 64 miles north to Skyland with multiple viewing points along the way.\n11 AM-11:30 AM – Arrive at Skyland for lunch\, more views\, and good company. Maybe kick a few tires too. You can see the Skyland menu here.\n\nPlease Note: \nYou will need a Shenandoah National Park Pass to enter Skyline Drive. Please allow extra time if you’re having it mailed to you. \nPlease RSVP by April 25 to Sean O’Malley (bagpiper116@aol.com) so we know how many folks to expect. \nSee Sean O’Malley’s invitation and article here in pdf form. He’s included some some interesting history about Skyland and the wildflowers we can expect along the way during this time of year.

Take a left into Sperryville\, follow 522 across the bridge\, and take the first or second right into the Black Twig Diner‘s parking lot. Total driving time will be about 1 hour. \nThe Black Twig is situated in a repurposed public schoolhouse from the (?) 1930’s. It and the surrounding school yard contain several art shops\, other commercial establishments\, and a golf course. We will be able to park together on the grass between 522 and their paved parking lot. People can order from their standard lunch menu and eat together in the school’s original amphitheater. \nSperryville offers an attractive small town feel. One can walk to Main Street and browse\, enjoy the Thornton River\, or visit the town’s distillery and associated antique\nstore. \nFor those wishing a more meandering return route south\, the Skyline Drive can be accessed from 211 west of Sperryville. \nPeople can join us at Cville Classic Cars or meet at the Black Twig. We plan to arrive there around 12:15 pm. Please RSVP to Mark Harris (mharris@cstone.net) by Friday\, October 25 at noon if you will be joining us for the drive or meeting us at the restaurant. \nMark and Mary Ann Harris” \nNEW UPDATE (10/23/2024): \nROUTE UPDATE FOR BLACK TWIG DRIVE \nVirginia’s Highway Department has been repaving Route 231 for weeks \n (https://madrapp.com/articles/regional/vdot-this-week-route-231-paving-sperryville-to-banco/)  \nand say they will finish before the weekend.  Only a small portion remains uncompleted\, but we could bypass this by taking 707 just past the village of Etlan\, then taking a left on Round Hill Road (604) and exiting on 511 just to the east of Sperryville. \nThis is a caution and guide especially for those who may join us there.\nMark

SUMMARY:(SVBCC) Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard British Revival Car Show
DESCRIPTION:A gathering for British cars\, organised* by David & Shirley Eames (both British)\, and held at Merrie Mill (owned by a British couple). Doesn’t get much more British than that. \n(*we just had to use the British spelling) \nHere’s the latest from David (as of late August): \n“As many of our members know\, I have been working for the past three years with Guy Pelly\, an Englishman and Co-Founder of the Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard in Keswick\, to organize this popular cruise-in. In the past\, we have had over 50 British cars take part including the new Minis! All British Car Club members will receive a complimentary glass of wine. I have reserved a table for 12 for our SVBCC members to use as a “home base”\, but if you would like to reserve your\nown table\, please visit merriemillfarm.com. There will also be plenty of first come first serve tables on the patio and on the lawns.\nAll participating British cars will be displayed on the perfectly flat paddock lawn in front of the tasting room so all guests at the winery can see them. British cars should follow the signs to the paddock area on the paved driveway. \nBritish car attendees: please email guy@marriemillfarm.com and copy me eames325@gmail.com indicating your interest so that we can prepare for your arrival. I hope to see you all there!” \nDavid Eames

SUMMARY:(SVBCC) Highland County + West Virginia Run
DESCRIPTION:Note date change! \nCome and join Wes and Kieren for an enjoyable run in Highland County on SUNDAY\, AUGUST 11th (new date).  We’ll gather at the overlook atop Shenandoah Mountain at the breastworks of Fort Johnston at 10:00 AM.  We’ll depart from there promptly at 10:15 for a drive to Palo Alto (a road sign “community”) located to the north on the border with our neighbor\, West Virginia\, and continue to the hamlet of Sugar Grove.  From there we head west and eventually make our way back to Monterey where we will take brunch at the recently opened Monterey Inn.  The drive isn’t very long\, 42 miles\, and takes right at one hour\, depending on how many “keep-uppers and hang be-hinders” are in the group.  Some of this route we have taken on a previous Highland County run\, but we are going in the opposite direction\, so the views are different but just as enjoyable. So come on out and let’s drive some mountain roads and eat well.  Please email Wes (wesmaupin@ymail.com) so appropriate reservations can be made as the Monterey Inn is a popular place to dine\, especially on weekends.  Cheers!

DESCRIPTION:ADDENDUM — May 14: \nBecause of the forecast for rain\, we have cancelled our weekend motel reservations and will go for a day at a time (on Saturday for the Trials and/ or on Sunday for the Races)\, if the weather permits\, as rain cancels our participation.  Please contact me with any questions.\nMark Harris \nJoin former Club member Ken Brasfield and me for another thrilling weekend of vintage racing at Summit Point Raceway. \nThe event will run 5/16-19; come for the whole weekend or for part of a day. More information on the event here. \nKen and I will leave from the Charlottesville area Friday 5/17 and return Sunday 5/19. We have weekend accommodations at the Rodeway Inn in Charlestown\, WV–located about 20 minutes east of Summit Point WV. We bring camp chairs\, beverages\, and munchies but rely on the snack bar for burgers\, fries\, and such.  We usually set up in the Infield across from the principal grandstand then scope out different views from other parts of the track. \nMany of us have attended the Jefferson 500 in the past and have enjoyed its excellent competition and high quality race cars. Some Club members have competed in the 500…not sure if any will race this year. British  driver Brian Redman used to compete regularly in a Chevron but I have not seen him in several years. \nFor further information contact me. \nMark Harris (see the Members tab for contact information)

SUMMARY:RAINED OUT - NEW DATE May 18! British Invasion (& Breakfast) @ Cars & Coffee Charlottesville
DESCRIPTION:We’re gearing up for a show of (British) force at the Charlottesville Cars & Coffee on Saturday\, May 4. This is held at the Barracks Road Shopping Center. \nCars & Coffee typically starts around 8am\, but if you can arrive early – say\, around 7:30 – park your car and stroll 100 yards over to First Watch (across from Greenberry’s) for a delicious breakfast. \nThere is no reserved parking at the show so it may be a little difficult for us to park together\, but in any case\, we’ll be together in spirit! \nCars usually start leaving the show by around 10 – 10:30am. \nC&C is a “rain or shine” event\, but if the weather is really bad\, we will choose another Saturday soon. \nAbout Cars & Coffee: Held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month (rain or shine)\, this is an eclectic gathering that ranges from 10 -100+ cars\, depending on the weather. There are sometimes a dozen or more British cars. Best of all\, it’s free! Please don’t park in the two rows closest to Chopt Salad.
