SUMMARY:[EVENT CANCELED] Paul Wilson: a British Car Retrospect (SVBCC Event)
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry – because we did not have enough people to qualify for the room at Wood Grill\, we have had to cancel this event. However\, Paul is sponsoring a Club event at his shop on May 16. \nAmong the membership of SVBCC\, we have something of a car-loving legend: Paul Wilson. He has graciously agreed to give a talk on his experiences with LBCs entitled: Paul Wilson: A British Car Retrospect on Sunday\, March 22 at the Wood Grill Buffet in Harrisonburg [1711 Reservoir St.\, Harrisonburg\, VA 22801]. We have a private room reserved for us from 1:00-3:00pm. \nWe are reaching out to local British Car Clubs to join SVBCC at this event. All are invited to attend to hear the challenges\, the beauty\, the excitement\, and oh\, the stories! about finding\, owning\, racing\, and restoring those beloved LBC marques. \nABOUT PAUL:\nCars have been a passion for Paul Wilson all his life. He has bought them\, sold them\, restored them\, designed and built them\, raced them\, read about them\, written magazine stories and a book about them\, and owned more than 130 of them. British and European sports and racing cars are his main focus\, but he’s also had very early ones\, and a few from America\, France\, Germany\, and Japan. He inherited from his father a love of British cars\, and this father-to-son Anglophile tradition is what he’ll describe through pictures in this presentation. \nHere are some links to articles about Paul: \n\nhttps://terryjohnsen.blog/2024/07/11/archive-flashback-july-paul-wilson-and-his-1965-lola-t70-roadster/\nhttps://theworldofclassiccars.com/2024/08/02/still-playing-with-cars/\nhttps://velocetoday.com/paul-wilsons-6c-2500-completed-revealed/

DESCRIPTION:Well due to the upcoming WINTER STORM!!!\, the Winter Party has been officially rescheduled to February 22.  Same Bat station\, same Bat time!!! \nFor those of you who do not speak Batman\, the Winter Party is rescheduled February 22 at 1:00 PM at Three-Notched Brewing Company 2461 Rockfish Valley Highway\, Nellysford\, VA. \nThose of you who registered for the January 25 event have been re-registered for February 22\, so please contact me if you wish to cancel. \nFor those of you who have not registered already\, please contact me by February 16 if you wish to attend the February gathering!!! \nBundle up and be safe!!! \nThanks everyone!!!! \nTodd P \nAs is our custom\, it is time for the SVBCC Annual Winter Party! Time to shake off the cabin fever and get a lungful of that crisp (ok\, maybe frosted) air to wake up the senses. And at this time of the year\, it is top down at your own risk!\nOur winter gathering this year will be on Sunday\, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Three Notch’d Brewing Company\, 2461 Rockfish Valley Highway\, Nellysford\, VA 22958. 434-226-0020\nThis will continue our tradition of alternating the site of our party from one side of the mountain to the other side!\n[Our backup snow date will be Sunday\, February 22.]\nFood and drink will be a la carte. This way everyone can have as little or as much as they like. And even though their claim to fame is as a brewery\, there is an impressive offering of wines and spirits! So combined with a good selection of snacks\, handhelds\, and entrees\, I am hoping everyone finds something to their liking.\nPlease RSVP to toddpat3 at gmail dot com by January 19 for the January 25 event\, so I can provide the restaurant with our number of guests. [Let me know of your attendance by February 16 for backup February 22 event}.\nHere’s to hoping for unusually good weather for one day in January! Looking forward to seeing you!\nTodd Patrick\nSVBCC VP

SUMMARY:Cruise-In At Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard\, Keswick
DESCRIPTION:A Preview Of the Merrie Mill Farms 5th Annual Vintage British Car Show by Dave Eames: \nSince I have come to know Guy Pelly\, an Englishman and co-owner of the Merrie Mill Farm and Vineyard\, I have sponsored every one of these events since they started in 2021. Following each of these car shows\, I meet with Guy and we review what went right and what could be improved. So after last year’s event I asked several of our members for their comments and two areas of improvement were noted which both related to the lack of food and music “Britishness”. I therefore recommended that Guy invites “The Pie Guy” and “Local Vocals” and this year he has managed to secure them both. Shirley and I have sampled The Pie Guy’s pies which reflect his training when he worked at a bakery in Australia (a former British Colony!) We have also seen Local Vocals on numerous occasions; they play music from the 60s & 70s and will be the best band this British car show has seen so far! Check out their website for a sample of their music.\nA few days ago\, Guy emailed me this flyer advertising the event. I think we\, as a club\, should continue spreading the word for Guy and copying it to all of our local Virginia British car clubs…I will provide an event update and a reminder in the August Newsletter.

SUMMARY:SVBCC Lunch / Fine Metalworking Presentation at Wood Grill\, Harrisonburg
DESCRIPTION:Club VP Bob Lasater has put together another “Occasional Lunch Get-Together”: \n“On July 26th\, longtime SVBCC member Paul Wilson will give a talk/slide presentation showing the development of his metalworking skills. He began with aluminum\, later found that steel worked better for his purposes. He formed the shapes over a solid buck\, then wood frames\, then steel rods\, making body sections for a Lotus Eleven\, an Amilcar\, and finally several Alfa Romeos. He works with relatively simple and inexpensive equipment\, similar to what French and Italian coachbuilders had when these cars were originally built. \nPlease RSVP By Monday\, July 21 to: rlasater2274@gmail.com. I need to give the restaurant a head count – maximum of 50 people.

SUMMARY:Picnic + Motorcycle Museum + British Car Tech Session at Mike Mutter's
DESCRIPTION:Michael Mutter has invited us to his beautiful home and workshop/museum on the Rivanna River near Earlysville. He admits to being more into motorcycles than cars (although he has a beautiful XK150 Drophead). Expect to see Nortons\, Vincents and Velocettes among the British bikes in this private collection. \nHere’s updated information from Michael: \n“Please join us for a luncheon at my home at 600 Sweibyan Dr. Earlysville VA 22936 to view my collection and shop from Noon to 3:30 on Saturday May 10. I will supply pulled pork\, black beans and rice\, beer\, wine and some form of sparkling water. Please feel free to bring an appetizer or dessert or supply your special dietary needs. \nMy collection is primarily motorbikes (OK\, also a 1960 Jaguar XK150 DHC\, hence membership in this club) with nearly two dozen British bikes from 1931 to 1972 with makes including Vincent\, Velocette\, Norton\, Ariel and Matchless\, and a number (greater than 30)  of Japanese\, Italian and other European bikes\, as well\, mostly from the 50s to 70s. I do my own mechanical and cosmetic work and will give a tour of the shop as well. \nThere will also be several technical demonstrations more relevant to the four wheel inclined given by Mark Lee. \nI hope to see you all. \nBest\,\nMichael Mutter” \nMark Lee is planning a brief tech session in Michael’s workshop to cover these three topics: \n\nThe inner workings of a gearbox – Mark has a dissected MGB gearbox and laid it out so that you can see precisely how power flows through the input shaft and layshaft to the gears on the output shaft\, what happens when you change gears\, and how synchromesh actually works.\nRelays demystified – how common relays actually work (much simpler than many realize)\, how their wiring is virtually universal\, and how you can add one to a circuit. If you don’t have a relay in your headlamp circuit\, this will show you how you can add one for brighter light and reduced strain/wear on your headlight switch.\nThe basics of constant vacuum carburetors like SU and Zenith-Stromberg – how they actually work and how they differ from conventional venturi carbs. We’ll have an S.U. apart for reference.

SUMMARY:(SVBCC) Drive & Brunch at Black Twig Diner\, Sperryville
DESCRIPTION:Mark and Mary Ann Harris are organizing an autumn drive and brunch in beautiful Rappahannock County. NOTE: date has been changed from October 19 to October 26. \nHere’s an update from Mark & Mary Ann: \n“Join us for a short-ish fall foliage drive from Charlottesville to Sperryville on Saturday\, October 26. We will assemble at Charlottesville Classic Cars\, 4257 Seminole Trail\, Suite C around 10:15 am. The owner\, Steve Messere\, has invited Club members to tour the shop and look at newly arrived cars. \nWe will depart about 11:00 am\, travel north on 29\, exit at Madison\, and go north on 231 until we “T” onto 522. Take a left into Sperryville\, follow 522 across the bridge\, and take the first or second right into the Black Twig Diner‘s parking lot. Total driving time will be about 1 hour. \nThe Black Twig is situated in a repurposed public schoolhouse from the (?) 1930’s. It and the surrounding school yard contain several art shops\, other commercial establishments\, and a golf course. We will be able to park together on the grass between 522 and their paved parking lot. People can order from their standard lunch menu and eat together in the school’s original amphitheater. \nSperryville offers an attractive small town feel. One can walk to Main Street and browse\, enjoy the Thornton River\, or visit the town’s distillery and associated antique\nstore. \nFor those wishing a more meandering return route south\, the Skyline Drive can be accessed from 211 west of Sperryville. \nPeople can join us at Cville Classic Cars or meet at the Black Twig. We plan to arrive there around 12:15 pm. Please RSVP to Mark Harris (mharris@cstone.net) by Friday\, October 25 at noon if you will be joining us for the drive or meeting us at the restaurant. \nMark and Mary Ann Harris” \nNEW UPDATE (10/23/2024): \nROUTE UPDATE FOR BLACK TWIG DRIVE \nVirginia’s Highway Department has been repaving Route 231 for weeks \n (https://madrapp.com/articles/regional/vdot-this-week-route-231-paving-sperryville-to-banco/)  \nand say they will finish before the weekend.  Only a small portion remains uncompleted\, but we could bypass this by taking 707 just past the village of Etlan\, then taking a left on Round Hill Road (604) and exiting on 511 just to the east of Sperryville. \nThis is a caution and guide especially for those who may join us there.\nMark
